Mozambique Ecosystem Lead

Full-time, Fixed-term 12 months (renewable)
Miarakap
Miarakap is an impact investment platform based in Madagascar, founded in 2018, with the mission of financing and supporting the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises to generate lasting economic, social and environmental impact in the Indian Ocean region.
Its work spans three complementary business lines:
• Investment - equity and quasi-equity financing for growth-stage SMEs through its managed funds, combined with active, hands-on support to portfolio companies;
• Advisory - structuring, fundraising and strategic advisory services for entrepreneurs, investors and development partners to strengthen the financing of the local private sector;
Mitsiry Biodiversity and Climate Fund II is a USD 50 million blended-finance fund, currently in closing phase, investing in 10 to 13 growth-stage enterprises in Madagascar and Mozambique. Managed by Miarakap and Kinomé, Mitsiry provides debt and equity financing to SMEs whose activities contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation and local economic development. As a blended vehicle, it combines commercial and concessional capital from development finance institutions and commercial investors to de-risk investment and channel patient capital towards businesses and sectors that are typically underserved by conventional financing.
Beyond capital, Mitsiry supports its portfolio companies with hands-on operational and technical assistance to help them scale their impact and reach commercial sustainability.
The Mozambique deployment is supported by FSDAi through the Mozambique Expansion Support Facility (MESF), with a clear focus on building the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Ecosystem building:

  • Map and engage the Mozambican entrepreneurial ecosystem (development partners, banks, business associations, accelerators, advisory firms, law firms); establish and maintain working relationships with key counterparts including FSDAi, FCDO, GIZ, BIOFUND, NedBank, donor agencies and local commercial actors.

MESF programme delivery:

  • Co-design and operate the MESF ; manage selection processes, bootcamp organisation, mentor matching and monitoring

Local presence:

  • Set up the operational presence of Mitsiry in Maputo, including office and logistics arrangements if needed, partner agreements with local technical assistance providers, and communication relays.

Pipeline support:

  • Support the identification and instruction of investment opportunities for the Mitsiry Fund by feeding the Madagascar-based investment team with local intelligence, pipeline leads and partner introductions. The role does not lead investment decisions but enables them.

Reporting and accountability:

  • Produce the impact and operational reporting required by FSDAi on a monthly and quarterly basis; document baseline data, partnership outcomes, and use of grant funds in line with FSDA / FCDO reporting standards, in coordination with the Miarakap Technical Assistance lead.

Visibility:

  • Represent Mitsiry at sector and business events

Required profile :

  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years in Mozambique or in the Indian Ocean / Southern Africa region
  • Experience operating with international partners and reporting in line with DFI or donor agency standards;
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate and connect across donor agencies, commercial banks, business associations, government counterparts and entrepreneurs;
  • Strong written and spoken Portuguese and English are required; working knowledge of French is an asset but not mandatory
  • Comfort operating with high autonomy in a setup phase, and discipline in execution and reporting;
  • Integrity, discretion and alignment with Mitsiry’s impact thesis (biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, local economic development).

What we are looking for in practice:

  • The right person is someone who knows people. The Mozambique entrepreneurial ecosystem is small enough that the right candidate will recognise most of the actors named in this document, and will be able to introduce Mitsiry to the others within their first month. The role requires judgment, network density, follow-through and the ability to represent an investment fund credibly to partners ranging from a donor agency to an entrepreneur in a rural cashew co-operative.

What Mitsiry offers :

  • Compensation aligned with the upper range of the Mozambican market for comparable senior roles in donor-funded programmes, with benefits package;
  • A 12-month fixed-term contrac, with renewal options conditional on programme continuation and Fund II Mozambique deployment;
  • Direct exposure to a credible blended-finance vehicle in final close, with the prospect of taking a more central role in Mitsiry’s Mozambique strategy as the Fund deploys;
  • Work with a small, senior, internationally experienced team based in Antananarivo and Paris
